Veeam Software, an Elite VMware Technology Alliance partner and a Microsoft managed partner, develops innovative products for virtual infrastructure management and data protection.

Customers can reduce costs, minimize risks and fully realize the promise of virtualization with Veeam.

Veeam is a leader in virtual machine backup, replication and monitoring solutions for both VMware and Hyper-V environments. Veeam is an international company that has been a major player in the virtual machine industry since 2006. They have over 60,000 customers worldwide and have won numerous awards from VMware and Microsoft for their best-of-breed solutions.

When backing up your virtual infrastructure for disaster recovery, there are several options. You can back up the application data and files separately, you can rely on snapshots of your VMs and use SAN replication/backup, or you can use tools to like Veeam Backup & Replication to store VMs in a backup repository and even replicate them continuously to a disaster recovery site.

Choosing between these solutions is often a matter of budget (can you afford san replication?), your requirements for recovering the data, and how the data is being stored. Often you will need to implement one or more of these methods for a complete backup plan.

For solutions where you require backups for virtual machines, Veeam Backup & Replication is a clear choice for many reasons.

Veeam is agent-free. It does not require any software to be installed in each VM for backups or restores. You simply need to install a proxy VM within your Hyper-V or VMware environment, and it handles all the “data movement” of VMs for backup and replication. Further, this proxy is able to retrieve data directly from the SAN, through the hypervisors I/O environment or via the network. This allows you to choose the most efficient method for your specific environment. Lastly, Veeam’s backup solutions can leverage VMWare’s Change Block Tracking (CBT) data so that only the specific blocks that have changed since the last incremental backup are copied. Exclusion of swap files is also an option, for the lowest backup overhead possible.

Veeam Backup & Replication software, which handles the management and de-duplication workload, can run either on separate physical hardware or in a VM, offering you complete flexibility. Further, it supports Windows Server 2012’s de-duplication on its repository, so you can get achieve maximum storage efficiency for your backups.

When recovering a VM you have several options. You can restore complete VMs, VM disks, or individual guest OS files from any incremental backup. This removes the need to restore an entire virtual machine in to a lab environment in order to retrieve a single file. There is also a separate e-discovery feature that allows you to search and selectively restore Exchange 2010 items (emails, notes, contacts, etc.) directly from Veeam backups and replicas.

For replication, Veeam registers a replicated VM on a target host. By utilizing technologies such as CBT, you can schedule replication jobs as frequently as every few minutes. Each consecutive job is stored as a VM snapshot, giving you the flexibility to start the VM from either the most recent or an earlier snapshot in the case of the primary VM going down. You can determine the number of snapshots based on your own retention policy.

Veeam offers several solutions in addition to its backup and replication product. Veeam ONE is a powerful, standalone, real-time monitoring and analysis tool. Veeam Management Pack offers additional insight for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager, and Veeam Smart Plug-in works with HP Operations Manager. Veeam Backup Free Edition is a free tool that can be used to create ad-hoc VM backups, restore data from VM backups or SAN snapshots, and more. It can be found at:
